Not authentic idealism, which is a thing of the past, but rather its blurred afterimages.
- Siegfried Kracauer
Cinema today is ubiquitous as a global medium, yet inflected in specific sites, ecologies, histories. The Urdu Film series stages a multiplicity of encounters between form, medium, and temporality. Saturated color threatens to dissolve into faded hues, and the rectangular cinema screen is submerged in the scansion and movement of the oval TV screen. This is a spatial and temporal journey of memory, shuttling between the past and the present and among distinct media configurations, evoking a perception of experience in South Asia that is flickering and hallucinatory.
